Light Adjustable Lens

What is the Light Adjustable Lens?

Do you have cataracts and need to have cataract surgery? Before having cataract surgery, you need to choose which intraocular lens you’ll have.

Intraocular lenses replace the natural lens where a cataract has formed, allowing you to see clearly. Ross Eye Institute proudly offers our patients the revolutionary Light Adjustable Lens.

How Does the Light Adjustable Lens Work?

The Light Adjustable Lens uses UV light to change the shape of the lens to provide patients with their desired visual outcome.

Light treatments are performed using the office-based Light Delivery Device (LDD). The Light Delivery Device is non-invasive and delivers UV light to the Light Adjustable Lens.

Your eye doctor can make adjustments and necessary refinements to meet your visual needs. Patients will begin their first light treatment about 2-3 weeks after cataract surgery to ensure healing is complete.

Patients typically need between 3 and 5 total light treatments. Light treatments last about 90 seconds each.

You’ll go in for your second light treatment about 3-7 days after your first treatment, and if you need additional light treatments, these will be 3-7 days after each prior. The number of light treatments required depends on the patient.

Each patient will have different desired visual outcomes. Once you have achieved your optimal vision, you’ll have two final light treatments to lock in your vision and prevent it from changing.

During each light treatment, you’ll see your vision changing and improving every time, making it easy to see why the Light Adjustable Lens is so revolutionary.

The key to the Light Adjustable Lens being successful is avoiding all other ultraviolet light, including indoor and outdoor light sources.  Wearing the provided UV-protection glasses keeps the Light Adjustable Lens from changing uncontrollably. Patients must wear the glasses from lens implantation until their final light treatment. it is recommended to wear the provided UV-protection glasses as natural UV light could possibly lead to inadvertent changes in prescription, although rare.

What Sets the Light Adjustable Lens Apart From Other IOLs?

Many things make the Light Adjustable Lens attractive to cataract patients. But it sets itself apart for a few reasons, including:

It’s the Only Customizable Intraocular Lens

The Light Adjustable Lens is the only customizable intraocular lens available. Even premium lenses cannot allow patients to customize, adjust, and change their vision following cataract surgery.

These lenses are permanent, and once implanted in the eye, the vision they provide patients with is set. There is no way to change that or improve upon it.

Until now, intraocular lenses were placed in the eye and unable to be changed unless they were removed due to a complication. The Light Adjustable Lens is different because it allows patients to choose their best possible vision and customize it to their specifications.

It Allows Patients to Preview Possible Vision Options

Besides providing patients with customized vision, it also helps patients see potential visual outcomes. Before a patient’s first light treatment, they will review possible vision outcomes with their ophthalmologist based on their preferences, lifestyle needs, and visual goals.

This option ensures that patients choose the best prescription that fits their unique lifestyle, no matter what they are doing. Following this, patients choose a prescription and begin light treatments to customize their vision to their optimal needs.

Who is a Good Candidate for the Light Adjustable Lens?

Although the Light Adjustable Lens can provide patients with vision they’ll love, it may not be suitable for everyone. You may be a good candidate for the Light Adjustable Lens if the following applies:

The only way to be sure if the Light Adjustable Lens or other intraocular lens is right for you is to schedule a consultation at Ross Eye Institute in Buffalo, NY.
