Ruth Marie Mattern, M.D., Ph.D. specializes in non-refractive cornea, including immune diseases of the cornea, corneal vascularization, corneal melts and perforations, corneal infections and dry eye disease. As the only cornea specialist in northern Arizona, she cared for patients in the Navajo and Hopi tribes and also treated patients in southwest Alaska, India, Nigeria and Nicaragua.
Dr. Mattern’s published research appears in Investigative Ophthalmology and Visual Science, Cornea and other publications. She has lectured nationally on the cornea and comprehensive ophthalmology, and taught courses in medical ethics at the University of Pennsylvania and Rice University.
